When Angela Marchmont goes to Cornwall on doctor's orders she is looking forward to a nice rest and nothing more exciting than a little sea-bathing. But her plans for a quiet holiday are dashed when she is caught up in the hunt for a diamond necklace which, according to legend, has been hidden in the old smugglers' house at Poldarrow Point for over a century. Aided by the house's elderly owner, an irrepressible twelve-year-old, and a handsome Scotland Yard detective, Angela soon finds herself embroiled in the most perplexing of mysteries. Who is the author of the anonymous letters? Why is someone breaking into the house at night? And is it really true that a notorious jewel-thief is after the treasure too? Angela must use all her powers of deduction to solve the case and find the necklace--before someone else does.

The Treasure at Poldarrow Point An Angela Marchmont Mystery Book 3 Clara Benson Books

Clara Benson was born in 1890 and wrote several novels featuring Angela Marchmont. Family discovered her hobby manuscripts in 1965 and have had three so far published (for Kindle, anyway). Finished my third and find them a joy to read. Set in the 1920s, fun for those of us who like to read authors who write settings in the period in which they lived. Characters and plots are good. In this one, the 12 year old girl is beautifully drawn. Reading the series, Angela grows as a person as background is filled in. A good read.

The Treasure at Poldarrow Point An Angela Marchmont Mystery Book 3 Clara Benson Books Reviews

Even though Benson's stories are set in the 1920s, they are a delight to read, keeping one guessing until the end. I find it refreshing to read dialogue from a time when people aspired to use proper grammar and speak proper English with a rich and varied vocabulary. I hope her heirs have found a veritable treasure trove of manuscripts that will be published in future.
I usually try really hard NOT to try and guess who the perpetrator is, but for some reason, in this book, I guessed rather early. But I had just about everyone else wrong! But I will NEVER understand why authors feel the need to put really unlikable children in their stories. I know we're supposed to think their misdeeds are cute or mischievous, but I really find them annoying, and find myself hoping for some bad end. That said, once again, Angela finds herself drawn into a mystery that has more turns than a mountain road. Add in her god-child, Barbara, and scrapes are gotten into right away. The main characters are interesting, and there's even a love interest! Yay! A lot of surprises make the end come way too soon for me. I will read it again.
Angela Marchmont is assigned to a vacation in Cornwall following a brief illness. Of course wherever Angela goes, intrigue soon follows, and the small village in Cornwall is no exception. In fact, she is soon embroiled in the search for a missing necklace that was taken in a robbery some 30 years prior. The search allows the discovery of hidden tunnels and secret rooms in a lovely old house that is just a few years from plunging into the sea. Suspense and lies combine for a very spellbinding read.
The third book in this series is set in Cornwall, where reluctant amateur detective Angela Marchmont has gone to recover from ill health. The mystery centers around an old house once owned by smugglers (as was every old house in Cornwall, if you believe the hype.) The frail elderly owner will lose her ancestral home unless she can find the diamond necklace stolen from a French queen and reported to be hidden in the house. There's also an infamous jewel thief who may be in the area and a shady young couple who keep very late hours and a "nephew" who may not be what he seems and an oddly-dressed "geologist" whose story wouldn't fool a toddler. Lots of layers to this onion!

Most of the detecting is done by Angela's goddaughter Barbara, a twelve-year-old terror. Incorrigible is the only word that describes her and that's not strong enough. Determined to find the necklace and save old Miss Trout from destitution, she takes risks and survives catastrophes that left me in a state of shock just reading about them. She's an orphan (having probably driven her parents to early graves) and the relatives who are supposed to look after her during school holidays develop scarlet fever in order to pawn her off on Angela.

In other Benson books, I figured out who-dun-it before hitting the 50% mark. There are plenty of broad clues in this one and I was onto several of the evil-doers early on, but two of them had me fooled completely. PLUS two characters whom I found highly suspicious turned out to be on the side of the angels. Either Clara was in rare form here or I'm losing my marbles.

This book has gone a long way toward convincing me that this series really WAS written in the 1920's. No modern godmother would allow a twelve-year-old girl to wander around by herself in the middle of the night with dangerous criminals lurking behind every bush. This has the earmarks of having been penned when "helicopter parenting" was far in the future. And it's not a NANCY DREW knock-off, either. The first book in THAT series didn't appear until 1930.
Book 3 in the series starts expanding Angela Marchmont's context, so to speak, first with the coming-to-life of her French maid and her either-English-by-birth-or-all-American chauffeur, and then with the arrival on the Cornish scene of her god-daughter, Barbara. Her presence pulls the novel in about 3 different directions. Barbara's exploits in pursuit of the legendary diamond necklace are staples of older children's and YA Lit - caves in the Cornish coast, old house with secret panels and rooms, mysterious moanings on the upper story, tunnels down to the sea - I wasn't sure if I was in Boxcar Children at the Seaside, Ellis Peters' *A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs* or a detective version of Susan Cooper's *Greenwitch.*
Pulling in the other direction is the "grown-up" plot of jewel-thieves and under-cover policemen, and to complicate this, Angela develops a "lerve interest" of a particularly mortifiying type, since her persona is to be highly "ladylike" about the entire detecting occupation, supposedly always on the side of law and order and eager to help the police without being pushy. This new element throws a considerable spanner in her works; the whole sub-plot enhances a quite complicated conclusion with some interesting twists on this well-worn scenario.
